Terry Burton was born in Greene County, Arkansas on the family farm as the youngest of five children.  His father was an elder and preached for several smaller "country" congregations.  His oldest brother was a preacher for over seventy years and two of his brothers have served as elders.  His sister has been a faithful Christian throughout her life.  Another brother died as an infant before Terry was born.  He credits the faithfulness of himself and his siblings to his Godly parents.

He was raised in Paragould, Arkansas, graduating from Paragould High School in 1959, lettering in football, basketball and track.  His best sport, however, was baseball, still holding some local league records.

After high school, Terry attended Freed-Hardeman College for two years then transferred to Harding College where he graduated with a BS in Mathematics in 1964.  While in college, he participated in varsity sports, playing varsity baseball at both colleges, varsity track and volleyball at Freed-Hardeman, and varsity football at Harding.

Terry married Betty Dollins, who was his high school sweetheart, in August 1962.  She then earned her PHT (Putting Hubby Through) degree working for the National Education Program at Harding for the handsome sum of $120 per month! Yep, there sure were lots of hamburger casseroles!

Three children were born to Terry and Betty: Lisa, Kimberley (Kim), and Kevin.  Lisa has two sons, Andrew and Aaron Cause.  Kim is married to Troy Graham and they have a daughter, Jennifer, and a son, Gregory.  Lisa, Kim, and their families are members of the Mesquite congregation.  Kevin is married to Kelly (Spurlock) and they have a daughter, Kamryn, and a son, Kyle, and live in Searcy, Arkansas.

After graduating from Harding, Terry began a career in computer software with General Electric in Huntsville, Alabama.  His career spanned 43 years working for General Electric, Honeywell, Magnetic Peripherals Inc, E-Systems, Mead Office Systems, Xerox, and Raytheon.  He began as a computer programmer and moved into management in the early 1970's.  He retired from Raytheon on August 31, 2007.

Terry's career took him and his family to Oklahoma City in 1966 and then to the Dallas area in 1975.  He and his family were active in congregations in all of these locations, where he served as a deacon in Bethany, Oklahoma and here in Mesquite.  He led singing in all of the congregations they attended and taught Bible classes, primarily adult.  Terry and Betty moved their membership to the Mesquite congregation in February 1977.  He served as a deacon from 1978 to 1997 in various ministries, primarily fellowship groups and worship.  In January 1997, he was ordained an elder by the Mesquite congregation.

After a three-year struggle with breast cancer, Betty died in 2003.  With God's blessing and the blessings of their children and grandchildren, Terry and Teresa Bussell (a widow of almost 9 years) were joined together in marriage on July 17, 2004 and now serve the Lord joyfully together with family and friends.

Terry's favorite chapter in the Bible is Philippians 2 and his favorite scripture is Philippians 2:3,4: "Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others."
